Bear Viewing - Kodiak Island and Katmai National Park 2 days and 1 nights

Travel to the 2nd largest island in the USA (2nd only to Hawaii) to view the largest bears in the world! Known as the Emerald Isle, Nature’s handiwork created a place of spectacular scenic beauty and a wilderness ideally suited for land, sea and and marine life. Jagged peaks, fjord-like bays and wide U-shaped valleys were left by the glacial retreat. Lush vegetation carpets the terrain, giving the Emerald Isle its name. But the real stars of Kodiak are its famous bears: there are in excess of 2,700 coastal brown bears living on the Kodiak Island archipelago. Adult females weigh from 400-600 pounds and the largest males weight up to 1,500 pounds! Rarely seen on the road system, float planes are the best way to see a good number of bears in a short period of time.

Travel Itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrive at Kodiak
Transfer to hotel. Time this evening to stroll the coastal city and browse the shops, or visit the Alutiq (local native group) Museum. The Baranov Museum provides a great review of the islands’ history from pre-European contact to the Russian colonial period to today.

Day 2 - Kodiak
Departing at 8am, you’ll fly in a remodeled de Havilland Beaver floatplane with experienced pilot-guide (Rolan has been flying Kodiak Island for 20 years!) He can take you straight to the greatest spots. He’ll brief you on what to expect and how to respond to the bears once you land in the Parks. The floatplane will land at a stream or tidal flat known for its bear populations. Several bears may be seen in a single day eating grasses, digging for clams and other exposed sea life and of course, fishing for salmon in streams. The scenery is breathtaking, and you should always be on the lookout for other animals such as Sea Otter, Orca (Killer) Whale, Gray Whale, Humpback Whale, Deer, Mountain Goat, Bald Eagle, Puffins to name a few. We’ll have time for a hearty lunch before heading back to Kodiak. Tour ends on arrival in Kodiak
