Klondike Explorer Dog Sledding Tour
8 days / 7 nights

The perfect dog sledding tour for those who want to experience the thrill of dog sledding a mountain trail during the day, but don’t want to rough it at night. You’ll ride the rails, and follow the trails around Lake Laberge (made famous in the Robert Service poem, The Cremation of Sam McGee), during the day, and return to an authentic, northern homestead cabin each evening. Giving you a great opportunity to experience the unique sport of dog sledding and ‘off the grid’ (of the road too!) living with a wonderful Northern family, the Yukon’s original dog sledding guides. You’ll also get to spend 1 night on the trail in a snug northern-style ‘wall-tent’; heated canvass tents stretched over a wooden frame.

Travel Itinerary:

Day 01
Transfer from Whitehorse to Lake Laberge where you meet the dog teams.  Guests receive basic instruction on driving a dog sled, before mushing a small dog team across the wide open, frozen lake to the homestead.  After unhooking the dogs and having a hot lunch, there is an afternoon “sled school” where you learn techniques for driving a dog sled on forest and hill trails.

Day 02
We set off with our dog teams on spectacular forest and hill trails overlooking Lake Laberge.  Lunch is a campfire cook-out.  Return to the home cabins for dinner and overnight.

Days 3 and 4
You will explore beautiful trails by dog team, while continuing to build a connection with your dogs and improve your mushing skills. We stop for a campfire cook-out or picnic lunch part-way.  We’ll spend about 5 to 6 hours per day on the trail before returning to the base camp each evening.

Day 5
Today we’ll pack up the sleds and head out for an overnight dog team camp-out – a wonderful way to spend time on the trail getting to know your team.  After a full day on the trail, we’ll arrive at our wall tent camp and cook outside over a campfire and melt snow to make water for the dogs and people. Evening free to sit around the campfire or help with the evening chores. Either way, you’ll have the chance to view Northern Lights and get to know your fellow travelers better before retiring to your heated wall tent.

Day 6
Breakfast for both dogs and guests, cooked over the open campfire.  Once everyone is well fed, we’ll return by dog team to the home cabins for the final night.

Day 7
This morning we’ll hook up the dog teams one last time to mush back across the Lake Laberge to meet the truck/van that will take you back to Whitehorse. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 8
Tour ends on hotel check-out.

DATES:

Tour departs each Sunday from Jan. 4 – March 29th, 2009.
