Cross Country Ski the Yukon Wilderness
6 days / 5 nights

Travel the Yukon back country on cross country skis. This skiing trip is perfect for those wishing to experience the Yukon wilderness in a lower-impact way. The tour will take you out into the vast wilderness of the Yukon, leading through forests, over hills, creek beds and lakes. The non-mechanized travels means wildlife is occasionally spotted along the trail. At times, we’ll be traveling along part of the famous 1000 mile Yukon Quest Sled Dog race trail. Ideal for those with some previous experience cross country skiing. The terrain along the 80km route is mostly gentle

Travel Itinerary:

Day 01 Whitehorse – trailside cabin
Pick-up at your hotel and transfer to our staging area. Our first day will take us about 13km to Coghlan Lake. Once at the lodge, guide and participants will share the tasks of cooking, heating the cabin and enjoy a hot, home cooked meal together. Tonight, with a little bit of luck, the Northern Lights will dance in the sky for us. driving a dog sled on forest and hill trails.

Day 02 Coghlan Lake Lodge
An early morning start is required to take advantage of the daylight and to ski to Frank Lake. Today we will have to cover
17km, but the terrain is gentle here, and the longest stretch will be on the lake. For lunch, we will stop and learn how to build a fire in the snow and enjoy some hot soup and drinks. In the late afternoon, we’ll return to the lodge. After a day outside, we share the task of cooking tonight’s meal while learning animal tracks in the snow and how to identify them.

Days 3 Coghlan Lake Lodge
Participants can sleep in and take it easy in the morning. In the afternoon, we will go on a snowshoe hike, identify the tracks we learned about the night before and enjoy the scenery at a slower pace. After supper, we will get the sauna going and spend the evening sharing slides of the Yukon and learning about travelling through its wonderful backcountry.

Days 4 Coghlan Lake Lodge
The group will hit the snow on skis again. We will do a loop exploring the wider area of the lodge, following a trail on the shoreline of Coghlan Lake. This open area offers phenomenal views of the nearby mountains.

Day 5 Coghlan Lake Lodge – trailside cabin
We’ll have to get started fairly early to make it back to the first cabin before darkness. Now with four days of exercise outside and knowing the trail, this will be a piece of cake for you.

Day 6 Coghlan Lake Lodge - Whitehorse
Today we ski back to the starting point of the tour. Once there, we will stop and enjoy a meal together at the local lodge before we go back to Whitehorse and the “civilized” world and a well deserved hot shower!

Note:

The transportation of gear and food will be shared among the guide and the participants while en route. Participants are required to pull a pulk (also called toboggan) or to carry a backpack. Your guide will carry an emergency kit, a SAT phone and an emergency stove while en route.
