Yukon Autumn Explorer
4 day / 3 nights

The Yukon’s newest Aurora viewing product allows you to experience the Yukon’s Aurora in the Whitehorse-area backcountry at a time of year that most would consider our off season. Autumn is in fact one of the best times of year to visit the Yukon; warm Indian-summer-like days feature brightly coloured aspen forests and crisp, clear nights are perfect for Aurora viewing. Our Autumn Aurora Explorer tour takes you deep into the Ibex Valley mountains just minutes from downtown Whitehorse, but a world away. Towering mountain peaks, crystal clear streams, wildlife and soaring Northern Lights a wait! During the day your guides will help you experience some of the Yukon’s most exciting wildness activities; dog sledding, ATV touring, fly fishing, canoeing, while the evening are spent watching the soaring Northern Lights while sitting around the campfire, or even from your own bed!

Travel Itinerary:

Day 1. Whitehorse – Homestead
Transfer from the airport, approx. 40 minutes along the shores of beautiful Marsh Lake to Inn on the Lake. After you get settled, you’ll have time for a stroll along the lake shore before dinner. Inn on the Lake is renowned for its cuisine which has even attracted the likes of Martha Stewart! Menus change daily and often feature locally grown meats, local fish like salmon and our specialty arctic char, organic vegetables, arctic char and wine selections from Canada, America, Chile and Europe. This evening, you’ll thrill at views of the Northern Lights soaring overhead, enjoyed from the frozen lake shore, or from the outdoor sauna and hot tub.

Day 2. Wilderness Camp
After breakfast you’ll have an ATV driving lesson, then travel by ATV 3 hrs into our wilderness basecamp, stopping along the way to fish for arctic grayling and/or enjoy some time for photograghy and interpretive sessions about the flora and fauna of the Ibex valley region. The trail you’ll follow was a trapper’s route decades ago and is truly spectacular; culminating with an incredible view from the trail halfway up Mt. Ingram (2500 feet above the valley floor).

After photos and a moment to relax and take it all in, we’ll make our descent to our basecamp of Mongolian yurts located on the pristine Ibex River. That night we have a delicious meal with wine, cooked on the woodstove, and then enjoy fireside drinks while aurora viewing after a well deserved sauna and shower. The Ibex valley is a fantastic place to watch the Aurora and in the evenings we often lay out on the valley floor dressed in parkas on top of sleeping mats, while watching the breathtaking show of the Northern Lights. Tonight you’ll sleep in a yurt with a five foot glass dome overhead so you can watch the Aurora from your own bed as you drift off to sleep.

Day 3. Wilderness Camp
Today we’ll pack a lunch and go on a hike for as long and as high as we desire. Some guests may prefer to stay around the camp, relaxing and reading their favorite book while enjoying appetizers outside around the fire or in the main yurt by the woodstove. You may also decide to try to catch some of the fine Arctic Grayling found in the “Home Pool” directly in front of the main yurt. The hiking group will return in time for a sauna and shower, another fabulous meal and a fine glass of wine and with any luck, more Northern Lights.

Day 4. Wilderness Camp – Homestead – Whitehorse
After brunch, you’ll have time for another short nature walk, this time following the river looking for the river otters that live here. Eventually we’ll make our way back to the basecamp and pack up our gear for the drive back to the Homestead. Following a late lunch, guests will be driven back into Whitehorse to their hotel or to the airport to begin their journey home.
